Johnny Lowe: The Family Afterward

Written by Valiant Living Recovery on Wednesday, May 20th, 2020

April 2nd was a proud day for actor Rob Lowe. His son, Johnny Lowe, celebrated his 2-year sobriety milestone at the beginning of April at 25 years old. After not really talking about getting sober before now, Johnny took to Instagram to share what it was like and what it is like now.

He posted a picture of him chugging a bottle of alcohol and another side by side picture that showed his sobriety tracker with 2 years, 24 months, 732 days, and 17,555 hours.

In his social media post, he talked about how different the times have been during the global pandemic and shared this tidbit for anyone who is suffering or is new. “It’s an incredibly strange and tense time in our world right now, and my heart goes out to everyone going through something, but today I am especially aware of the addicts who are looking for help and having a hard time finding it.

If this is the case and you’re reading this, reach out to someone: a friend, a family member, me… and go online and find a ZOOM AA meeting and JUMP IN!!”

Addiction Is a Family Disease

Rob Lowe, who will have 30 years of sobriety this month, was known for his party boy days back in the ‘80s during the Brat Pack era. His drug-fueled boozing nights in Hollywood were well-documented and the actor was also part of a few sex tape scandals back in the day,

Realizing he could not go on living the way he was living he finally conceded to going to rehab in 1990. He told Oprah in a 2014 interview, “I didn’t love the fact that I had to go and it was unbelievably painful but I like the science.”

He goes on to say, “I couldn’t have gotten sober without rehab because I needed the science … I needed to do the work. It was like going to law school.”

Rob has been open about not missing the old days. In a New York Post article, Lowe stated, “I couldn’t even begin to contemplate the level of scrutiny that exists today. It’s such a different world.

There wasn’t social media or cameras on our phones.” He also said, “Being sober, I found all of the promises they tell you about and then some.”

Recovery Is a Family Solution

Both men got sober at a young age and both are upfront for being grateful they were able to be an example early on in their lives. Now that both Lowe men are sober, they are thoughtfully using their platform to let others know that sobriety works when you work it.

Rob Lowe responded to Johnny Lowe’s post as any gratified father would along with a little recovery advice. “I have never been more proud. Your hard work is an inspiration. Keep coming back.”
