You may have come into recovery kicking and screaming because no one really wants to get sober. Although you may have found yourself sick and tired of being sick and tired, giving up something that alters your feelings and your thoughts can be difficult. Not to mention, that pesky obsession that would not let up from telling that you are not worthy of getting sober nor do you have the strength to do it. Well, now is the time to fight back against your addiction and let it know there is a new boss in town – your recovery.
To become attuned to your recovery, being grateful is probably the best thing you can do for yourself. When you are living in gratitude you are just happier, more confident, and more persistent in living your life to the fullest. To bask in gratefulness will be easy by finding a few ways to appreciate your recovery every day.
You are who you surround yourself with. If you are hanging around people who are negative, chances are you will be just as negative. Seek out people who exude gratefulness and call them to hang out. Find out why they are so dang happy and follow suit. Start exchanging daily gratitude lists or affirmations over text or go for a walk with them to see how they demonstrate such a positive example for others.
Being alone with yourself may give you the heebie-jeebies, but do not knock it until you try it. For your recovery to work, you have to understand and digest truths about yourself. This means knowing what your triggers and cravings are and understanding what brings you joy. Use your time wisely and make sure you are implementing activities that give you peace of mind. Meditating, exercising, or knitting are all things that make you sit with yourself for the better good of your recovery. Taking time to nurture your soul is important and the best way for that to happen is to be comfortable with yourself. Once you get comfortable on the inside, you can be easygoing with others and start exuding your gratefulness on the outside.
Every day you get to live another day sober should make you grateful on its own. Living sober, however, is so full of everyday blessings that will innately make you feel grateful to be sober, free, and alive one day at a time.
