Covid-19: An End-of-the-Summer Update

Written by Valiant Living Recovery on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021

The United States is currently experiencing a rise in covid cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. In fact, as of July, 35% of the counties and 90% of jurisdictions in the United States are experiencing high levels of transmission. The rise in cases is primarily due to a decrease in the number of vaccines being administered and the rapid spread of a new, more lethal variant.

Increase in Cases

The summer began with a notable drop in new cases but, as of July 22nd, the 7-day average of daily new cases increased from 27,443 to 40,246. Meaning, in the span of just one week, the number of new cases increased by 46.7%. One of the primary reasons for this spike is the delta (B.1.617.2) variant. In fact, the CDC predicted that cases attributed to the delta variant will increase to 83.2% because it is more transmissible than the original variant.

Vaccinations

As of July 22nd, about 162.2 million people, or 48.8% of the total U.S. population, have been fully vaccinated and 187.2 million people, or 56.4% of the total U.S. population, have received at least one dose. However, the CDC reports seeing a 35.2% decrease in administered vaccines in just a matter of a week. Subsequently, many cities have reinstated mask mandates for both adults and children.

Protecting and Preparing Yourself

It is still critical that you stay up-to-date on covid related news by referring to your doctor, local health officials, and school officials for the latest developments, regardless of your vaccination status.

Adhere to handwashing and social distancing guidelines, and try to remain flexible if guidelines change over time. Avoid panic buying; keep at least a two-week supply of essentials including food, medications, first aid kits, and household supplies. Lastly, prioritize your mental health and emotional well-being.

The covid-19 pandemic has been distressing for people in the U.S. and around the world. Maintaining your physical health is critical, but it is equally important to take care of your mental well-being, especially if you are in substance abuse treatment or suffer from a mental illness.
