Why We in Recovery Are the Luckiest

Why We in Recovery Are the Luckiest

No one is ever really jealous of the life of addiction. There are so many pitfalls and disasters that take place when we are under the influence of drugs and alcohol, which by the way, is merely a symptom of something much bigger. We have experienced some low lows to get the place that we are ready to agree to a life of recovery because we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Once we submit to a life of complete abstinence in sobriety, there is no doubt that we, in recovery, are the luckiest people on the planet and here is why.

We have surrendered

Once we have gotten to the point that we can no longer live with drugs and alcohol, nor can we live without them, we get to a jumping-off point where we have to stop altogether, or we die. Resigning to the fact that we can no longer safely drink or use is imperative to improve our mental, physical, and spiritual growth. Waving a white flag in the air may appear like a weak move to make, even though surrender is actually a sign of strength.

We have survived

People who suffer from addiction literally are like cats because they have nine lives. We put ourselves through the wringer with the copious amounts of drugs and alcohol that are enough to kill us from an overdose, as well as the dangerous situations we put ourselves in under the influence. To come back from an insidious addiction recovered is definitely an anomaly. To survive in ways that we thought were impossible makes us indeed blessed.

We have a design for living

Although there are people who are not addicted to drugs and alcohol who have not experienced all the adverse incidents, we have been through during our addictions, they are still not happy. One of the best things about being in recovery is we get a design for living that makes us happy, productive, and accountable, which gives us the ability to live life to the fullest again.

We have each other

There is nothing better in recovery than the love and support that we get from one another when we are willing to accept the sober camaraderie that is being offered. We have to make sure that we are looking for the similarities in one another, rather than the differences, to find the hope in recovery.

Recovery may seem like a life sentence even though the truth is that recovery is the best way to go. Not only do we gain serenity and clarity, but we are the lucky ones to have a program that is so instrumental to our long-term sobriety.
