Cannabis has been made recreationally legal in a few states across the United States and more states are soon to follow. With marijuana being legal and the laws of growing residential marijuana becoming more lenient, pot has become more accessible. The ease of obtaining marijuana could create problems with not knowing which strain you are getting and if the marijuana is laced with other drugs that could be lethal. Marijuana has been known to be laced with cocaine, PCP, methamphetamines, LSD, heroin, spice, fentanyl, and in more recent news reports, Carfentanil.
A short-acting, quick onset synthetic opioid that is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl, 5000 times more powerful than heroin, and 10,000 times more powerful than morphine. The misconception is that marijuana is laced with Carfentanil, but the reality is that Carfentanil looks almost identical to marijuana and is being sold as such with a fatal twist – only a few milligrams of Carfentanil is fatal to humans. This dangerous opioid is used for anesthetizing large mammals such as elephants and elk for veterinarian use and not meant for human consumption.
There is much going on with Carfentanil that is deceptive. Carfentanil looks very similar to marijuana although testing proves that there is no cannabis in the product. Even someone who is a seasoned marijuana user may not be able to tell the difference which could cause death from consuming a small amount of the product. Without knowing what a person is taking, they could be more susceptible to overdosing with a small amount of Carfentanil. Being considered a lipophilic chemical, Carfentanil can cross the blood-brain barrier quickly with ease.
Although Carfentanil is not brand new, it came onto the scene in 1986 under the name Wildnil. In 2016, Carfentanil started making the news as people were using illicit drugs, such as Heroin, laced with the powerful drug. Instead of just using it for the animals, people were looking for a new and more potent way to get high which is where Carfentanil came into play.
When it comes to getting high, even with people who are looking for just a mellow marijuana high, they can never be sure of what they are consuming unless they produce the product themselves. Even then, drugs, including alcohol and marijuana, can be dangerous mentally and physically because of the changes that take place in the body and the brain under the influence.
