How to Deal with Zoom Fatigue

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, you may be growing tired of virtual meetings. The term “Zoom fatigue” has been popularized to describe this phenomenon. Whether it is the strain on your eyes from the computer screen glare or your longing for physical connection, many are finding themselves in a place of desperation and desire to escape online meetings. One way to combat this feeling is to log off and find other ways to connect.

Log Off

Outside of business hours, it is okay and necessary to log off of virtual meeting platforms. Furthermore, it is okay to give yourself vacation days. You can set an away message and give yourself the time you need to spend time outdoors, pursue a hobby, or spend time with family.

Find Other Ways to Connect

If you’re wanting to catch up with a friend, but dreading the thought of looking at them through a computer screen — you have some other options.

  • Try writing them a letter
  • Try pursuing a joint activity. You can tap into your creative side and send pictures to mark progress and give updates
  • Go for a walk together

An additional tip to consider includes taking a more comical approach and identifying what type of “Zoomer” role you have assumed. Are you the Zoomer where family members make cameo appearances, the one with a water bottle or other props, or the virtual background type? A funny idea to consider.

Furthermore, consider exploring the settings feature of your virtual meeting application. Changing the way you view colleagues and friends during these meetings may break up the monotony and lighten the mood for everyone.

Remind yourself that this is not going to last forever. As the vaccine is distributed and herd immunity takes effect, social activities will start taking place again. Restaurants and travel will eventually re-open. To ease the strain in this present moment, however, remember that you do not have to be glued to your computer. Taking time to log off and find other ways to connect is a great way to combat “Zoom fatigue.”
